ARCHÆOS (arkeos) explores the beauty of preservation and decay of human history. The pictures offer an alternative perspective of ancient ruins and monuments, not as individual objects for sightseeing, but rather as artefacts of preservation of historical memory. This work serves as artistic documentation of live archaeological sites, and it makes us consider what has been left to us, and what will we be leaving after we’re gone.
Through this work, Ramirez Perez re-contextualises these sites by showcasing the archaeological process that surrounds them. Presenting these elements, a perspective of the present is brought into the historical sites, which takes the viewer through the whole lifecycle of civilisation, from a pile of rocks that is transformed into a space of life and existence, which through time decays back into a pile of rocks, and finally turns into a place of re-discovery.
